| The reusable 2 Minute
Form provides basic information about voyage plans
and is designed for pleasure boat owners out for a short trip
in the local area. The information you leave behind will be
vital in event of a search and rescue emergency.
The 2 Minute Form includes your name and
address, contact names, who is with you, your intended trip
and the stops you plan to make. It also has a full description
of your boat and the safety gear you have on board.
Fill out the form, or write a note which includes your plans
and boat description, and leave it with a reliable friend
or relative. They can contact Coastguard and the Police if
you do not return as planned.
If you have a VHF radio you should also file a trip report
with Maritime NZ Maritime Radio or your local Coastguard, letting
them know where you are, where you are going, how many people
are on board and when you expect to return. If you change
plans keep in touch using the radio. Remember to obtain a VHF
Operator Certificate. It is legally required and you will
also need a call sign.
Don't forget to cancel your trip report when you arrive safely.
Each year something goes wrong for thousands of pleasure
boat owners. By simply letting others know your voyage plans,
you greatly increase your chances of help arriving quickly
when something goes wrong.
2 Minute Forms are available free of charge from Water Safety
New Zealand, Maritime NZ and Coastguard Boating Education.
